Picking the right grass.
Pick by sun exposure first. Heavy oak canopy or shaded yard means St. Augustine. Open full-sun lot with high traffic means Bermuda. Family yard with partial sun means Zoysia. Rural acreage on acidic soil means Centipede. Soil profile and use case shift the recommendation, which is why your installer walks the lot at the quote stage.
St. Augustine has been the most-installed grass on the Northshore for decades. The wide blade, deep green color, and shade tolerance fit the older oak-canopy neighborhoods across most of Mandeville, Covington, Slidell, and Hammond. Palmetto St. Augustine is the cultivar your installer drops on most St. Augustine jobs.
Centipede. Slow growth means fewer mowings. Light fertilizer needs cut the chemical bill. Tolerance for the regional acidic sandy loam means no soil amendments needed. Centipede saves roughly twenty mowings per year on a one-acre lot compared to Bermuda or Zoysia.
Yes, and your installer can recommend it. Heavy oak canopy in the front yard plus a sunny back yard frequently calls for St. Augustine in front and Zoysia or Bermuda in back. Larger acreage with mixed exposure can run two or three grasses across the property. Mention zone differences when you call for a quote.
Cut and loaded fresh, then delivered to your property. Pallets reach your lot within 24 to 48 hours of cutting. Plan to install within 24 hours of delivery, especially in summer heat.
